Don‘t miss ‘Teens, Dreams And Jeans’— A Benefit for Foster Teens of San Pasqual Academy

July 28, 2010 by Sharon Corp · Comments

A unique event is taking place on Saturday, Sept.11, at 5 p.m., that promises to be highly entertaining for all who attend! “Teens, Jeans and Dreams”, a team penning competition is being held that will benefit the 140 foster teens of San Pasqual Academy. Chairpersons are Art and Catherine Nicholas, Charger Quentin and Alicia Jammer and Jockey Danny Sorenson. Come cheer on your favorite riders as they attempt to become Champion Team Penners. Local riders include Philip Wilkinson, Marcy Gehrke, Jenn Marun, Gina Poage, Nicole Johnson, Gene Ventura, Art Nicholas, John Daley, George Scott, Lauren Hester, Melisse Mossy, John Farris, Susie Kaplan, and Joie Gatlin. A VIP Silent Auction and Cocktail Reception, headed by Karen Ventura, will also be held for the sponsors of “Teens, Jeans and Dreams”.

What is team penning? This is a very exciting and fun activity to watch that involves horses, western riders and cows. It is a timed competition, where a team of three riders on horses attempt to put three of the same numbered cows in a pen. The team that does this the fastest, wins! Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it sounds. There are 30 numbered cows in a herd and each team must cut three specific cows that have the same number out of the herd. They must bring these cows down to the other end of the arena and put them in a corral. If more than four cows cross over a designated line, the team is disqualified. Many amusing things happen trying to accomplish this feat!
The event will be held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in the Del Mar Arena on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. Cost of a ringside VIP Sponsor box is $1,000, which includes dinner and beverages for six people. General admission tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for children, 12 and under. General admission tickets can be purchased through Mary Murray at Wells Fargo Bank in Rancho Santa Fe and at Pacific Western Bank in Rancho Santa Fe. To purchase the VIP Silver Horseshoe Box, please call 858 759 – 3298.
Major Sponsors of this event include Ken and Carole Markstein, Markstein Beverage, Bill and Donna Herrick, Art and Catherine Nicholas, Craig and Karen Edwards, Rancho Santa Fe Insurance and Financial Services, Ron Phillips, Northern Trust, Alicia and Quentin Jammer, Marc and Patty Brutten and Gene and Karen Ventura .
Committee members include Carol Tager, Lois Jones, Dagmar Helgager, Teri Summerhays, Kathy Lathrum, Ann Boon, Heidi Hollen, Karen Ventura, Monica Sheets, Betty Redmon, Gina Poage, Patty Brutten, Anne Mc Cabe, Joanie Spence, Marcy Gehrke, Jenn Marun, Gene Ventura, Tina Caldwell, Nicole Johnson, Phil Wilkinson, Nina Williams, Debby Syverson and Joan Scott.
A “Calcutta” will be conducted before the competition begins. This provides the opportunity to purchase a team that one feels will win the competition. Come cheer or bid on riders that are from other disciplines, which include dressage, hunter/jumper, saddleseat and western riding. Proceeds from “Teens, Jeans and Dreams” will benefit the 140 foster teens of San Pasqual Academy and is hosted by Friends of San Pasqual Academy.
If you would like to sponsor or attend this event, please contact Joan Scott at joscott24@hotmail.com or call (858) 759-3298 or visit our website at www.friendsofsanpasqualacademy.org. Donations and sponsorships can be sent to Friends of San Pasqual Academy, P.O. Box 8202, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067.
VIP Sponsor boxes and general admission tickets can be purchased by sending a check for amount of tickets to P.O. Box 8202, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067.

The Browtique Salon

Welcome

When Browtique was conceived, Dee Bush(owner) set out to bring a level of expertise to meet or exceed the high expectations of the local clientele.

“By the name we are specializing in brow shaping. We work with the natural shape of your brows–we don’t use templates or stencils–we are artists so we work with what you have.”

Brow artist Lindsay Klein Started about 11 years ago as a student at Poway Academy. Klein then went on to train under Anastasia of Beverly Hills, the internationally known authority on the perfectly shaped brow.

“You can take someone young and give them a thin brow and it can look great on them, but as they get older and those hairs aren’t coming back because they have been waxed and waxed and waxed, it’s going to age them,” said Klein, 29.

Browtique offers a variety of services such as waxing, brow and eyelash tinting, makeup application, spray tanning and facials by Klein and Karin Krick, a medical esthetician. “Everyone in this salon is extremely talented and they all add a different element so it really is a dynamic team,” said Klein.

Aside from its daily services, Browtique will host monthly visits of Beverly Hills-based, hair-coloring guru Michael Canale and Dr. Munish Batra of Coastal Plastic Surgeons with Botox sessions. Canale, known as the colorist of actress Jennifer Aniston, also boasts a clientele that includes Denise Richards, Faith Hill, Sela Ward, Blythe Danner and the singer Shakira.

A fellow realtor completes “Walk for Warriors” effort

July 23, 2010 by Sharon Corp · Comments

Local resident and Rancho Santa Fe real estate broker John Cote walked 2,140 miles from San Diego to Georgia in 98 days.
Cote made the “Walk for Warriors” trek to raise awareness about soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as raise funds for the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that houses families of wounded soldiers for free near military hospitals across the U.S.
Cote has collected $26,000 so far, in addition to a $10,000 donation to Fisher House at the Naval Medical Center in Balboa Park. He plans to keep the fund open for donations until Dec. 31 at walkforwarriors.blogspot.com.

Walk4Warriors A fellow realtor completes Walk for Warriors effort

As far as his effort to raise awareness about wounded soldiers, Cote says, “There’s no way to know how much of an influence that [my walk] had but it was more than zero.”
Cote left on April 1 from the Naval Weapons Station in Fallbrook and arrived at Fort Benning, Georgia, on July 7. He returned to San Diego on July 10, the trip home taking considerably less time—anxious to get back, he drove cross-country in two and a half days.
Cote’s plan was always to walk 20 miles a day—he drove his car ahead 10 miles, walked back 10 miles and then returned to the car. He spent some nights in hotels, some camping and some sleeping in his car.
Cote said the key to his journey was getting into a daily routine. He’d start each day with coffee and breakfast and try to finish that day’s walking by 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. at the latest.
“It usually took me about two hours to recover and feel 100 percent energetic afterward,” Cote said.
Before resting up for his next batch of mileage, he would always take time to write in his blog and reflect on the experience of the day.
One of the things that amazed him most about his walk was that he couldn’t go a day without meeting or speaking to someone who had a military experience—whether it was their own or a relative’s.
Once people found out the reason Cote was walking, the stories would come. Many people knew someone who had been in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Cote said he really enjoyed seeing the particular slice of America he walked through.
“I saw so many beautiful places because I chose to walk in really rural areas,” said Cote of the sights in Texas and Louisiana. He especially loved “lush and lusty” Mississippi and the days he spent on the University of Mississippi campus.
In Texas, he also met another man on a cross-country walk—the other man walking with a cross on his back.
Cote took him out to lunch. “I just wanted to find out if he was crazy and it turned out he wasn’t,” Cote said.
He said his hardest days were in New Mexico—the wind was so heavy with dust and gravel that he felt as though his legs were being “sandblasted” — and the dust even became caked onto his teeth.
“It was horrible,” Cote said. “I picked up a mask and goggles that I wore for a week in New Mexico.”
During the trip, Cote said he also experienced a bad reaction to insect bites and his legs became inflamed after a brush with toxic plants. He took a trip to a Mississippi emergency room where the war even found him there.
The nurse who helped him wore a necklace with a pendant imprinted with her nephew’s thumbprint—she told Cote he was killed in Afghanistan in July 2009.

Thanks in part to films like “Jaws” and “Finding Nemo ,” so many people are terrified of sharks.

And why shouldn’t they be? Sharks have rows and rows of sharp teeth, their skin feels like sandpaper and they’re attracted to the smell of blood.

Turns out, however, there are more than 300 types of sharks in the ocean and very few of them actually attack humans.

“Sharks are wonderful animals,” said Nigella Hillgarth, director of the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. “They have more reason to fear humans than we have to fear of them.”

So, in order to make people less freaked out around these sea creatures, Birch is hosting its annual Shark Week program. The event, which has been going on for more than a decade, begins Saturday and runs through July 23.

What to expect: The La Jolla aquarium will feature special shark-related lectures and activities. They have more than 10 species and even breed their own sharks, so there will be young ones on hand for people to pet — very gently and with just one finger, but, still, you get to touch a shark! There will also be shark scavenger hunts, detailed displays and photo opportunities in the “Great White” booth.

Dive times: There will also be informative, shark-related dive shows happening in the two-story kelp forest tank. Catch one at 2 p.m. Saturday; 10:30 a.m. Sunday; 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and 12:30 p.m. next Thursday.

See more sharks: Any newfound love affair with sharks doesn’t need to end once Shark Week is over. There are plenty of places in San Diego to explore them further:

California Sea Life Aquarium is also highlighting sharks this summer with daily shark talks at noon and 3 p.m. Fans can pretend to be shark biologists at the Shark and Ray Adventure, happening Thursdays through Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and Wednesdays at 2 p.m. through Aug. 28. Sea Life Aquarium is located at Legoland California Resort in Carlsbad; tickets are $12 to $19; legoland.california.com.

Don’t forget the Shark Encounter at SeaWorld, an exhibit that features a 57-foot walk-through acrylic tube where you can see sandtiger, bonnethead, blacktip and nurse sharks swim right above you. seaworld.com/sandiego.

San Diego sharks: Yes, there are sharks living in our ocean. Some of the types that we have close to the shore and at the bottom of bays include the gray smoothhound, leopard, horn, swell and angel sharks. Don’t bother them and they most likely won’t bother you.

Comics and pop culture aficionados will soon descend on San Diego in droves for the Comic-Con International, an annual convention that’s long been an economic boon for the city but may move elsewhere in a few years.About 125,000 people annually attend Comic-Con, which features hundreds of exhibits, celebrity appearances, film screenings and industry panels over four days.

In recent years, the confab has been embraced by Hollywood as one of the premier events to haul out new action, fantasy, science fiction and animated movies and television shows.

This year’s sold-out gathering runs July 22-25 at the San Diego Convention Center.

But the future of Comic-Con in San Diego remains uncertain. Other cities such as Los Angeles and Anaheim have been trying hard to lure Comic-Con to their cities, starting in 2013.

According to a recent report, Comic-Con will inject nearly $163 million into San Diego’s economy during this year’s run.

To keep the show in San Diego, officials have offered Comic-Con organizers a half-million dollars in incentives to stay and are working to possibly expand the Convention Center.

Comic-Con began in 1970 as a one-day convention at the U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. Since then, the event has become so popular it has outgrown even the Convention Center, spilling out to other venues.

Despite the uncertainty about its future home, the lineup for this year’s Comic-Con will be crowd-pleasing.

Industry insiders and a lucky few will get a taste of what’s in store at this year’s Comic-Con during a preview night on July 21, which will include a behind-the-scenes look at the new television series “Nikita.”

Highlights of opening day include the debut of DreamWorks’ animated “Megamind;” an inside look at Walt Disney Pictures’ “TRON: Legacy”; Sony Pictures Entertainment showcasing its new film “Salt”; Summit Entertainment giving a sneak peek of footage from “Red,” and an “insider scoop” of “The Expendables.”

July 23 is “Star War” day, with panel discussions and special programs. Also, Universal Pictures will present an exclusive look at the science fiction thriller “Skyline,” CBS with showcase its sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” comics legend Stan Lee will discuss his work Sony Pictures will preview its upcoming films “The Other Guys,” “The Green Hornet” and
“Priest,” and the cast from “True Blood” will take part in a panel discussion.

The 22nd annual Eisner Awards, considered the “Oscars” of the comics industry, will be given out at a ceremony at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront that Friday night.

The following day, Seth MacFarlane will discuss “Family Guy;’ NBC will premiere “The Event,” Warner Bros. will showcase the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” Matt Groening will discuss creating “The Simpsons” and the cast of NBC’s “Community” will make an appearance.

Also on Saturday, the cast of “The Vampire Diaries” will answer fan questions, Universal will present two upcoming films “Paul’ and “Cowboys & Aliens,” writer- actor Kevin Smith will meet fans, Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage will discuss their show “Mythbusters” and Marvel Studios will give an inside look at “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

The last day of the convention features a cast question-and-answer session on the final season of “Smallville,’ a discussion by the creators of the game “Halo,” a panel on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” and an appearance by the cast and creators of the Fox television hit “Glee.”

Among the many celebrities rumored or scheduled to attend this year’s Comic-Con are Angelina Jolie, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Liv Tyler, Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Seth Rogen, Chevy Chase, William Shatner, Jon Favreau, Sigourney Weaver and Danny DeVito.

Another Extension Request for Lillian Rice Project

July 14, 2010 by Sharon Corp · Comments

lillian-300x232 Another Extension Request for Lillian Rice ProjectThe Rancho Santa Fe Association-approved application for the Lilian mixed-use residential and retail project in the RSF village is set to expire on Aug. 5.
The RSF Association has already granted one extension for the 41,211-square-foot project slated for the parking lot at the corner of El Tordo and Avenida de Acacias. RSF Association Manager Pete Smith said the Association board is currently scheduled to hear another extension request that same day, Aug. 5.
“The board will have the option at that time to approve or disapprove the extension request,” Smith said. “If the board decides not to extend the application approval then the property owner would have to start the application process again. The board does have the authority to extend the approval and set the length of that extension.” Smith said that, generally, the board grants an extension on a project when the delay is caused by the county approval process
