I Love Music, grew up on 70′s (Disco to Led Zeppelin) & 80′s (Punk Rock to REM) and Classical to Country.  My dad loves Country.  Willie Nelson, Clint Black, Garth Brooks and so do I.  Country has become a mix of pop and country, but one of the things that I love about, especially in these times, Is that it is Uplifting!

The Summer Concert Series is held annually at the Del Mar Highlands Town Center.  It is one of about 3-4 of the closest shopping centers to Rancho Santa Fe. The center is located on the corner of Del Mar Heights Road and El Camino Real.  As you will read below the center is about 20 years old but still a favorite of the local residents, probably because it is the center that also has the movie theater….

Del Mar Highlands Town Center renovation plans

As reported in last week’s Carmel Valley News, Donahue Schriber recently unveiled plans for a “reimagined” Del Mar Highlands Town Center (depicted in rendering above), a renovation of the 20-year-old center that will provide family-oriented amenities, including intimate gathering spaces that create a sense of neighborhood, as well as an increased variety of quality dining, shopping and entertainment options (including an extensive renovation of the movie theater and community amphitheater). Additionally, the renovation will improve parking, traffic flow and the overall pedestrian experience at the Del Mar Highlands Town Center.
Construction work will begin late summer of 2010 and the renovation is anticipated to be complete by summer of 2011, with a grand reopening celebration to occur shortly thereafter. It’s been a North County Coastal staple for as long as I can remember.  Whenever you can’t think of where to go for dinner the final answer, the stand-by, is always Fidel’s.  Fun atmosphere, fantastic food and GREAT Margaritas.  The other day I was there and as we were leaving some friends, who had moved here from out of state, asked “why is there a barber shop poll on the wall?”.  The reason is because originally Fidel’s was a barber shop.  The barber’s wife started to sell her tacos to the patrons and the rest was…… History. Fidel’s Little Mexico has been a San Diego landmark since the early ’60s when owner Fidel Montanez came up with the idea to serve tacos at his busy barber shop. The shop was located in the heart of Eden Gardens, a small neighborhood in Solana Beach that was home to a number of Mexican families. The tacos sold like hotcakes, and before long, the place evolved into a neighborhood cantina. The business thrived and expanded as Fidel converted his two-story residence into three different levels, including a festive courtyard, a couple of bars and outdoor patios, and a taco bar. Today, Fidel’s ranks among the top restaurants in San Diego County.

Happy hour is offered four days a week in the large upstairs  bar. Fidel’s menu offers traditional favorites as well as house specialties that will transport you and your party South of the Border.

Well I didn’t either….What It’s All About: On June 21 skateboarders around the globe celebrate the pure exhilaration, creativity, and spirit of one of the most influential activities in the world by blowing off all other obligations to go skateboarding. OK, most skateboarders do this every day of their lives, but this is just one more reason to blow off your television/computer/video games and go skateboarding!

A favorite of Rancho Santa Fe residents for Skateboarding, Summer Camps, and TONS of other fantastic programs is The Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA.  It’s a huge facility and has programs for all ages.  Plus the staff is Phenomenal!  The Skate Park is one of the best in the world with a 120’ vert used at the 2003 X-Games and two of the best cement pools in the country, the Y Skate Park is known as the best of the best. GFH helped support the local community by sponsoring the park and helping to provide a safe place for kids to skate. Now Go Skate and Don’t forget to wear your pads and helmet.

Just 5-10 minutes west of Rancho Santa Fe is North Coast Repertory Theatre, located at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach.  NCRT  is a professional equity theatre founded in 1982, the theatre has the fifth largest operating budget of non-profit theatres in San Diego and employs the third-most Actors’ Equity Association members.  David Ellenstein has led the NCRT as its artistic director since 2003.

Even more important then it’s impressive qualifications are the reviews….  A RSF resident wrote “Great little venue for a show.  Always a good selection of shows to see.  Good actors and fun atmosphere.”  My favorite review is “North Coast is a gem of a theatre showcasing a full season of plays and musicals. Don’t be fooled by the venue. The place is almost always packed, and the shows are well reviewed. Their core artistry is so solid and their returning audience so strong, that they have recently announced plans to build a second theatre. The drive is about 20 minutes from downtown San Diego, so that’s not a reason not to go. For food before or after the theatre, walk over to Pizza Nova in the same shopping plaza. Pizza and a play, it works!”
